No Joy Faith no more

A review of the No Joy album More Faithful.

Montreal’s No Joy just released their third studio album More Faithful on Mexican Summer records. This duo have been gaining momentum since their inception in 2009, and their shoegaze, atmospheric tunes and hypnotizing live performances have given them much-deserved notoriety.

From the beginning, More Faithful puts the listener in a glorious trance. “Everything New” sonically floats above the clouds until distorted guitars turbulently cut beneath on the chorus. “Hollywood Teeth” has a delicious mix of dreamy and cutting guitars that produce one of the most engaging new songs. “Burial in Twos” is more synth driven and adds variety. The closing track, “Judith” calls to mind an amped-up version of something from the Cocteau Twins’ Heaven Or Las Vegas.

With this new record, No Joy becomes more their own. They’re showing fewer signs of classic shoegaze influences and more of their own unique voice. More Faithful is definitely one of the best records to come out so far this year.
